![]() ![]() When my goddaughter was 8 or 9, I knew a Switch was going to be in her future. Oh! And there's one other gaming thing I do. I'm sure AC:O was $60 new, but I paid $19. In the past I haven't been a big fan of third-person perspective games, but this is pretty great, so I may go back and see about something like Red Dead 3 or whatever.Ī nice thing about being a more sporadic gamer (ie, vs how I was at 25 or 30) is that when I finally get around to playing a given game, it's cheaper. It's Origins, and I'm really enjoying it. I was enjoying the console experience - hey, big TV and full surround, right? - so after reading a blog post about it from a fellow Old Person ( /u/wilw), I picked up my first Assassin's Creed game last month. I parsed Fallout 4 as "Fallout 3 in Boston," so I just did a replay of Fallout 3, had a great time, and saved myself like $700. When Starfield dropped a couple months ago I gave serious thought to buying a new Xbox - mine's a One - to play it, but then the reviews mostly all said "this is Fallout 4 in space." My favorites have been Fallout 3/4/NV, Dishonored & its sequels, Bioshock & its sequels, The Outer Worlds, etc. I'm busy, and have a time-consuming hobby (cycling), so I don't have a lot of time for gaming. Mostly, I play a given game obsessively until I'm done, and then don't play anything until another appealing title comes along. The other gaming has mostly been story-based shooters on whatever console I had at the time. It was fun and cool, and even better I could play it on my laptop on the couch watching TV with my wife instead of holed up in my office. I was never much of a raider, but enjoyed getting to the level cap, and REALLY liked how in those days there were ample people in all the zones. I played from open beta on and off for about 10 years. Gaming for me in the last couple decades has fallen into a couple categories. Until 20 years ago or so I also kept a PC up to date - my actual computers have been Macs since about 1999 - but I gave that up long ago. ![]() I have, for most of my life, kept a reasonably current console. Starting to think I should just focus on turn-based for now. As a DnD nerd in childhood and fantasy lover, I've been trying to get into Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma, but I think the combat (even at low settings) and uncertainty about how to proceed contstantly, make them a bit too much. I know I've read comments that some games take 10-12 hrs to really get going, but I can't motivate myself to struggle that long in the event I don't enjoy the game. Gaming has been a pretty nice respite, but I've found that games often presume a certain amount of background knowledge of how "things usually work in this genre", which has led to me getting daunted early in games and jumping to another. (Recently they're finding that LC messes with the gut and serotinin production.) This has made my psychology and emotions go haywire.
